Mindy Kaufman

Mindy Kaufman joined the New York Philharmonic as flute and solo piccolo in 1979 at age of 22, after performing for three seasons with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She received a bachelor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music and studied with Walfrid Kujala, Bonita Boyd, and James Galway.

In addition to playing solo piccolo, Ms. Kaufman has substituted as associate principal flute with the New York Philharmonic both in New York and abroad. Ms. Kaufman performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic with Music Directors Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, and Lorin Maazel. For one season she substituted as principal flute with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Kaufman performs chamber music regularly with her colleagues in the New York Philharmonic, and has performed with many other groups, including, the Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music, Moab Music Festival, and Grand Teton Music Festival, 

As part of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy, Ms. Kaufman has taught at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy since 2014. She has also taught at Summer at Eastman, Columbia University, and as a substitute flute teacher for Juilliard Pre-college.

Solo recordings include Avner Dorman’s Piccolo Concerto with the Metropolis Ensemble, Vivaldi’s Piccolo concerto with New York Philharmonic recorded live, and a solo CD, French Flute Music. Ms. Kaufman has performed at the Japan Flute Convention, National Flute Convention, and New York Flute Club. A sought-after commercial musician, she has performed on more than 45 film sound tracks.
